East Grand Schools adopt new calendar
Ryan Summerlin February 12, 2014
Next year, East Grand students can give thanks for having an entire week off in November.
During their regular work session on Tuesday, Feb. 4, the East Grand School District board adopted a new school calendar after noting student attendance rates drop off around Thanksgiving. School will now start a week earlier, on Aug. 25, 2014, to allow for an entire week off from Nov. 24-27. Classes will end the first week of June, as usual, and graduation for seniors won’t change. Most other breaks also won’t change, including Christmas and New Year’s break, spring break in April, and holiday time off for Memorial Day and Labor Day. The four-day weekend in February, however, will be eliminated.
According to discussions at the school board meeting, the calendar change proposal came after conducting 10 parent focus groups and surveys around the district. The adopted calendar only applies to the coming year, and will be re-evaluated by the school board before it adopts a three-year calendar for coming years.
