Felon arrested in Granby for evading multiple charges

GRANBY —The Granby Police Department successfully carried out a planned take-down and arrest of a wanted felon, who was residing in Grand County.

Arrested in front of City Market in Granby on Aug. 14, Paul Timothy Hanson, 34, had seven felony warrants out of California and was deemed a fugitive of justice.

“Presumably, our community is a little safer,” said Granby Police Chief Bill Housley.

The felon was wanted on charges of failure to appear in court on two burglary charges, insufficient funds, also referred to as fraud, and possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine.

“It appears he was up here trying to avoid detection,” Housley said

Wayne Schafer, a police officer with the Granby Police Department, was the officer who developed the intelligence that spurred the operation and arrest.

The officers of the Granby Police organized a plan for the take-down, led by Sgt. Jim Kraker, and included every officer from the Granby Police Department.

Once the take-down started, officers in civilian clothes blocked the suspect’s vehicle where it was parked in front of the Subway using unmarked cars and rushed the vehicle, identifying themselves as police officers and instructing the man to get on the ground. A K9 unit was also used in the take-down, as were uniformed officers in police cruisers.

Officers wore plain clothes and utilized unmarked cars to allow them to get close to the subject before completing the take-down, Housley said.

“No excessive force was used in the apprehension of the suspect,” Housley said.

Granby Police conducted the take-down with assistance from a few officers from the Fraser and Winter Park Police Department.

The felon will now appear in court in Grand County on a fugitive of justice charge before he is extradited back to California to face the seven felony charges for which he is wanted.
