Granby’s annual Turkey Bingo returns
November 17, 2016
Grab the kids and head on down to the Grand Fire Protection District (GFPD) Firehouse this weekend for Granby's annual pre-Thanksgiving tradition: Turkey Bingo.
Each year the members of the GFPD put on the Turkey Bingo event. This year marks the 69th year Turkey Bingo has been held. The event features, as its name implies, bingo games. Bingo winners will receive a coupon for a free turkey from the GFPD. This year, in honor of the 69th iteration of Turkey Bingo, the GFPD will give away 69 turkeys.
Along with bingo games the Turkey Bingo event features a silent auction with lots of great items, pulltab tickets and a large offering of concessions with traditional favorites such as chili, hot dogs, pizza and soda.
Turkey Bingo will be held beginning at 6 p.m on Saturday Nov. 19 at the GFPD Firehouse in Granby. All profits raised through the Turkey Bingo event go directly into the GFPD's Scholarship & Community Assistance Fund (SCAF). The SCAF provides monetary assistance to local families in need.
Individuals can apply for aid in two different and specific areas; one for scholarships and one for community assistance. The scholarship portion of the fund is open to any student of any age living within the boundaries of the GFPD and is intended to cover costs of extracurricular activities such as camps or travel/study abroad programs.
The community assistance portion of the SCAF is for families living in the district who are in need. Citizens can apply for assistance through to SCAF to cover things such as rent, food expense, medical emergency costs. Anyone living within the GFPD can apply.
The District's firefighters make up the SCAF Committee and review applications and then make recommendations to the District's membership, which then votes on awarding funds through the SCAF. Applications for the SCAF can be obtained at the GFPD firehouse or on the District's website, http://www.grandfire.org.
