Forest Service to burn slash piles near Stillwater Pass
Ryan Summerlin December 18, 2012
U.S. Forest Service crews will burn slash piles near Vagabond Ranch on the west side of Stillwater Pass near Colo. Highway 125 today, Tuesday, Dec. 18. Ignition should take place around noon.
The area is covered in more than a foot of snow and crews must snowmobile into the site. It is currently snowing in the area.
The site contains approximately 8000 piles on 188 acres, remaining from recent mountain pine beetle mitigation projects.
Burning elsewhere around the Sulphur Ranger District will continue over the coming weeks as conditions allow. Wind, fuel moisture and snow cover all play a factor in where and whether ignition occurs.
