Updated: Gore Ridge Fire spreads into Gorewood Estates

A serious wildland fire, which officials are calling the Gore Ridge Fire, broke out in Grand County Tuesday afternoon Sept. 13. The fire was burning in the Gorewood Estates housing subdivision, located several miles west of Kremmling on County Road 14 South, near the entrance to the Grand River Ranch Tuesday around mid-afternoon.

Local firefighters from throughout Grand County were in the thick of battling the blaze Tuesday afternoon as fire officials reached out to the Craig Interagency Dispatch Center requesting aerial suppression resources in the form of a Type 1 and Type 3 helicopter. The Grand County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) was also hurriedly working Tuesday with a large contingent of deputies on scene going door-to-door assisting with evacuation efforts for the subdivision, which have since been completed.

So far the fire has expanded to approximately three-acres and is burning primarily in heavy timber. Aerial resources were arriving around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon with officials from the Grand Fire Protection District (GFPD) confirming that a helicopter and air attack were on scene.

The fire was initially burning on county wildland west of Kremmling, just outside the actual boundaries of the Kremmling Fire Protection District, but spread into the Gorewood Estates subdivision. The fire is currently threatening structures though no structure damage and no injuries were reported as of mid-afternoon. Mountain Parks Electric has shut off power to the subdivision and a Code Red notification has been issued.

According to County officials the fire was the result of a slash pile burn that got out of hand and expanded into a wildfire. Multiple agencies have responded to the fire including: Kremmling Fire, Hot Sulphur Springs Fire, Grand Fire, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the US Forest Service (USFS), the GCSO and Kremmling Police. A pair of Grand County water tender trucks are also assisting.

The fire is still active. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
