Granby plans for depot upgrades

The Town of Granby is making plans to repaint the Town’s railroad depot, located on Railroad Avenue between downtown Granby and Grand County Road 57.

Officials from the Town government have been discussing maintenance work as well as possible upgrades and repairs for the Granby station off and on for some time now but in early Sept. the discussions took a step forward as Town officials began developing plans with community citizens involved in some of Granby’s design and beautification committees.

Design Committee member Rod Lock addressed the Granby Board of Trustees and outlined some of the Committee’s plans for beautification for Granby. Lock outlined a three-phase plan the Design Committee developed for the train depot.

Phase one focuses on the Granby train station and improvements for the building. Lock explained the Committee’s desire to paint the exterior and interior of the depot, install signage and way finding to direct those stopping at the Granby station towards the downtown business district and to install decorative lighting, including some special Christmas lighting.

Phase two of the project plan developed by the Committee calls for landscaping work, installation of benches, decorative items such as flowerpots as well as installing some functional items such as gutters.

Phase three of the project, which Lock said the Design Committee did not expect to see occur for multiple years, would involve the construction of a direct access path from the train depot to the Granby main street area. The train depot is significantly lower than most of downtown Granby and rests within the broad Fraser River flood plain, unlike the town which is contained mostly on a set of surrounding mesas significantly above Railroad Ave. Town officials discussed possibly repainting the depot with new colors, and discussed using deep red or maroon colors and highlighted the Georgetown Loop Train Depot as a possible source of inspiration.

Granby’s Finance Director Sharon Spurlin informed the Board the Town has a maintenance budget for the depot totaling $3,000, of which only $47 has been spent so far this year. No formal decision on the project was made but several Board members presented the possibility of having Town Trustees and others volunteer paint the depot’s exterior in an attempt to reduce costs associated with the project.
