Horizons Specialized Services was awarded $5,000 from the Grand County Board of County Commissioners. Funding from the 2013 grant cycle will be allocated towards Horizons’ Family Support program. Family Support is one of Horizons’ programs that work in partnership with families and communities to expand opportunities for individuals with, or at risk of, developmental disabilities.
The Family Support program offers service coordination and financial assistance to families with an eligible family member of any age living at home. Funds are used to reimburse families for expenses incurred while providing care for their child, including medical and professional treatments and therapies, respite care, home modifications, insurance deductibles, co-payments, and adaptive equipment. Family Support covers expenses not covered by insurance or Medicaid.
Currently in Grand County, Horizons serves 32 families in the Family Support program. “The goal of the program is to reduce the additional financial and emotional stress associated with raising a child with special needs,” said Deirdre Pepin, Horizons’ Resource Development Coordinator. “For our families, medical bills and other related expenses can add up fast. Any support we can offer truly makes a difference, for the child and for the family.”
