Judy Burke, Citizen of the Year

The Rotary Club of Grand Lake announced last week that Judy Burke is their 2016 Citizen of the Year.

Burke has served for over 28 years as Town Board Trustee, mayor pro-tem and for the last 11 ½ years as the Town’s mayor. Prior to being a public official she served as a member of the Board of the Grand Lake Chamber, and member and chair of the Grand Lake Planning Commission.

During her term as an elected official, along with help of Town Staff and Town Board Burke has achieved the following: kept gambling out of Grand Lake, brought cable TV, Natural gas, Pay Per Throw Trash, annexation of Grand Lake Lodge, the paving of Grand Avenue, the formation of a Grand Lake Affordable Housing Fund, and added filtering systems to help keep Grand Lake clean.

Most recently, her accomplishment was helping purchase of the Grand Lake Elementary School (now the Grand Lake Center).

Burke is involved in county-wide communication by starting joint mayors meetings. She has testified before the US Senate Subcommittee on Wilderness Legislation and participated in the White House signing of the Wilderness Bill which gave wilderness protection to parts of Rocky Mountain National Park.

In 2010 Burke was appointed by then Secretary Of The Interior, Ken Salazar to the National Park Service Advisory Board as the Elected Official Representative. She was reappointed to that position to serve until 2018 by the new Department of the Interior Secretary Sally Jewel. She became chair of the National Natural Landmarks Program and was appointed to the National Park Service Centennial Committee.

Burke is still an active participant in the movement to improve collaboration between the National Park Service and the gateway communities which they serve, and has attended meetings in Utah and Colorado for that purpose.

The Rotary Club of Grand Lake will be hosting a dinner in her honor at 6 p.m., October 20 at the Grand Lake Center.
