Letter: Cartoon lacked humor, doesn’t apply here
Ryan Summerlin August 19, 2014
To the Editor:
In response to the editorial cartoon in the Sky-Hi News on Aug. 12 illustrating that school supplies include Kevlar vests and concealed weapons: Dismissing the total lack of humor, it was, at best, completely inappropriate for our school district.
Please allow me to make a more responsible comment to the parents of the 1,200 school children preparing for back-to-school: First, every member of the school district has no greater priority than school safety. From the Board of Education to the teachers in every classroom, every decision is made with attention to safety first. All children should arrive at school prepared to learn in a safe environment.
Secondly, safety and education do not stop when your child leaves school or gets off the bus. When parents get involved in their child’s education it makes a positive change, and a little bit goes a long ways.
Finally, please remember that weapons, including concealed-carry weapons, are not allowed on school property, including parking lots and sporting events, with the exception of law-enforcement personnel only. Please help keep your community schools a safe learning and working environment for everyone.
