Letter: Judge’s evaluation doesn’t match juror’s experience

To the Editor:

Regarding the Sky-Hi News article on Aug. 6, “State panel: Don’t retain Judge McClelland,” I was recently on a jury for a trial for which Judge McClelland was the presiding judge. When I read the Sky -Hi article regarding the state panel’s recommendation, I couldn’t reconcile the panel’s finding with my recent experience.

The Judge McClelland I witnessed was courteous and fair to both prosecution and defense. He was respectful of the jury and took time to answer questions and explain points of law as necessary.

At the conclusion of the trial and after the jury had rendered its verdict, he took the time to visit the jury room, answered additional questions and personally thanked each of us for volunteering our time and attention, and he re-emphasized how important a trial by jury is to our system of government and to personal freedoms.

I had never met Judge McClelland before trial, but based on what I observed I believe he deserves to be retained.
