Letter: Klancke, Invest in Grand County’s future

Invest in Grand County’s future
We all agree that it is wise to start investing in our retirement as early as possible. It is also every bit as wise to start investing in the future of our county now rather than later. Generations to come will benefit from the impact that passing Issue 1A will have on Grand County. Most other West Slope tourist counties have had a sales tax issue to support open lands, river and trails for a long time now. I feel that it is time for Grand County to follow their lead. We have one advantage to other West Slope counties in that we still have large amounts of open space to preserve. The time to start upping our efforts to protect what is so special in our county is now. By funding Issue 1A with a three tenths of a percent sales tax, ½ of the tax burden will be paid by our visitors who come to enjoy the environment that we are so lucky to live in. The half that locals will pay will amount to a $5/month investment in our children’s Grand County. Approving Issue 1A will raise funds to establish an advisory committee represented by Board members from every corner of the county. These Board members will be charged with investing funds to keep water in our county for agriculture and outdoor recreation. They will also be charged with conserving agricultural lands, natural areas, scenic open lands, wildlife habitat and wetlands. Our hiking, biking and skiing trails will also benefit from Issue 1A. These trails play a pivotal role in our tourist based economy. Please vote yes on Issue 1A to preserve our county’s rivers, open space and trails. This is an investment in the economy and the quality of Grand County.
