Letter of Thanks: Emergency room patient commends Middle Park Medical

To the Editor:
On March 18 I was brought to the Middle Park Medical Center emergency room by friends after I was involved in a high speed snowmobile accident. While I was experiencing some neck pain, my primary concern at the time was a damaged pinky finger. As it turned out, I had suffered a broken neck and I was transported to Denver Health trauma center for care. But this short description of events does not begin to describe my wife’s and my experience in the facility.
From the moment I entered the doors, I was treated with an unexpected sense of concern and care. I was not relegated to a side room where I would be on hold until the dreaded paperwork was completed, I was immediately brought to the examination room where Dr. Mark Paulsen immediately began to attend to me. Throughout the process of resetting my finger to having to tell me the news of my neck, he was professional and personal, at the same time with an excellent “bedside” manner. I am grateful to him for his treatment and especially for the time and care he took to decide to direct me to Denver Health. In addition, he believed me when I told him I was much more comfortable in a sitting position for the EMS ride and he went to bat for me to overturn the “lie down” transport protocol EMS had that would have been much more uncomfortable on my ride into Denver. Thanks EMS for being flexible and thanks again, Dr. Paulsen for being an all-American physican.
My dear wife, as one might expect, was near distraught when she heard the words “broken neck” and all that conjured up in her mind. She has asked me to thank the staff at the admitting desk for helping to comfort her and calm her down as much as possible. She felt she was not alone in dealing with her fears and runaway emotions during our time there. For this we are thankful for team Granby’s support.
The EMS duet that took us to Denver with Rob as the driver with my wife and Mary in the back with me were also real and caring people. To summarize, we feel totally blessed for me to have received the care I did from Granby ER to Denver ER. Only when the acute need arises that we need excellent medical care do we find out we have it right here in Grand County and for that, all residents and visitors must be thankful. Keep up the great work!
