Tabernash man wins big on ‘The Price is Right’

TABERNASH — Grand County resident Randall Barrett welcomed delivery of a big prize last week, won on the popular television game show “The Price is Right.”

Barrett joined his wife Toni for a taping of a show, filmed in Hollywood, Calif., on April 29.

Contestants are selected from the studio audience at random and compete for prizes by playing pricing games. After being called on stage to participate, Barrett successfully estimated the values of three items in the game “Rat Race.” His prizes included a new Nissan Sentra, valued at around $16,000. The show aired on May 5.

“It’s been a two-month high since then,” Barrett said. “It feels fantastic.”

The car was delivered to his home in the Tabernash area. Barrett had to pay $1,600 in California income tax and 7.5 percent California sales tax before the vehicle was released. He will also needs to claim the prize on his next income tax return. But Barrett said he plans on keeping the car.

Barrett also came close to participating in the “Showcase Showdown,” a collection of high-dollar prizes in which two contestants bid on values. Showcase contestants are selected by spinning a large wheel with sections ranging from 5 cents to $1. The participant who comes closest do $1 becomes a Showcase participant, with a chance to win the large prize package. Barrett was only one wheel click away from tying.

“I about hit my knees. I thought it was going to hit that dollar, then it clicked one more spot,” he said. “I was beggin’ for it; it was that close.”

“The Price Is Right” debuted in 1972, and is one of the longest-running American network TV series. The show airs on CBS on weekday mornings.
