Winter Park Resort hosts Chef’s Cup as top to bottom skiing starts

As I returned to work Thursday morning after not winning the Powerball jackpot (although it was worth the two bucks to dream about what I would do with that much cash), I got some news that is even better than having a few hundred million in my bank account: Snow is in the weekend forecast.
I guess all those private and interpretive snowdances and sacrifices to Ullr are finally paying off.
While the weather report isn’t calling for a major dump, at this point I think we all agree we’ll take what we can get. Chances for snow are expected for Sunday night and Monday and will, one hope, bring enough to get a good base down so we can start sliding down more than the “goobe tube,” as a buddy of mine called the trails that are currently open.
Wait, what’s that? Winter Park Resort has announced that it’s opening top to bottom skiing on Friday? That’s right kids, the Zephyr Express will be turning on Friday with service to Cranmer onto Village Way, with the possibility of more lift/trail openings later in the weekend.
The resort has a slew of events planned to celebrate the top to bottom opening including: Two for one tickets (you must present a coupon that can be found on the resort’s website); two for one draft beers, shots, appetizers, and lunch specials at the Lodge at Sunspot all weekend long; live music; and the Chef’s Cup Dinner and Dance. No doubt these are some good events for couples. However, you’ll see me up there going stag and double fisting after taking advantage of the two for one drafts.
The 13th annual Chef’s Cup Dinner and Dance will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Winter Park Resort’s West Portal Station, and will feature food from a number of local restaurants, complimentary drinks, dancing, and a silent auction with some pretty cool items up for grabs.
Proceeds from the Chef’s Cup will go toward the Winter Park Ski Education Foundation, which supports Winter Park Competition Center athletes who would not otherwise have the resources to participate in the ski programs.
Already this winter, the Winter Park Ski Education Foundation has provided more than $40,000 in scholarships to area youths.
The theme of this year’s event is “Taste of Colorado” and will feature an array of tasty fare from a number of local restaurants including: Devil’s Thumb Ranch, Deno’s Mountain Bistro, The Lodge at Sunspot, Fontenot’s Seafood and Grill, Hernando’s Pizza Pub, Maverick’s Grille, Strip and Tail, Tabernash Tavern, and Crooked Creek Saloon.
Guests can taste and vote for their favorite culinary creations and can also enjoy complimentary wine and beer from Robert Mondavi and Mary Jane Ale.
For those feeling a little footloose, there will be a DJ present to supply beats to complement the food and drink. Once you have filled your gut and voted for your favorite grub you can hit the dance floor and boogie like it’s 1982.
While your attendance supports the Winter Park Ski Education Foundation, those looking to practice a little more philanthropy will have the opportunity to bid on a number of great items, provided by the event’s generous donors, during the silent auction.
A week-long vacation in Mexico at a two bedroom/two bath penthouse with two rounds of golf on a Trent Jones Golf Course will be up for grabs at the auction, for those who are already starting to get a little case of cabin fever. Those looking to add a few moves to their skiing play book can bid to attend Bob’s Mogul Camp – three days of holding that zipper line with the acclaimed Bob Barnes – or a “First Tracks Private Lesson” with US Ski Team freestyle skier Freddie Mooney for up to four people.
Other items that will be available through the silent auction include: A US Ski Freestyle Team uniform, artwork from Karen Vance, two-nights’ lodging in a Beaver Village condo, two-nights at an Iron Horse condo, a pair of Dynastar Active Exclusive skis (153cm), and six Freestyle Masters coupons.
Tickets to the event are $60 for an individual and $100 for a couple in advance or are available at the door for $70. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Competition Center in the Balcony House or by calling 970-726-1590.
