Possible billing scam hits Mountain Parks Electric member

A Mountain Parks Electric member in Grand County reported that she had received a call around 6 p.m. on Nov. 19, 2013, from a person identifying himself as a Mountain Parks Electric employee stating that her account would be disconnected within five hours if a payment was not made immediately. The caller attempted to collect payment via credit card to a MoneyPak account number. The member did not comply, but instead contacted the Mountain Parks Electric office the following morning.
“This is a scam,” states Rosemary Knerr of Mountain Parks in a press release issued Nov. 20. “Mountain Parks Electric does not call and threaten to disconnect at night or on weekends if payment isn’t made immediately. We also do not use a MoneyPak payment account. We have learned that the phone number given by the caller 803-900-8681 is a Magic Jack number and other utilities have experienced similar calls to their members. Mountain Parks Electric urges its members to be on guard to this scam and report any suspicious collection calls to our billing office at 970-887-3378.”
