Skiers die at Purgatory, Steamboat ski areas

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) – Two skiers have died in accidents at Colorado ski resorts this week.A 23-year-old ski instructor at the Arapahoe Basin ski area was found dead at the Steamboat ski area Wednesday.Routt County Coroner Rob Ryg says Grace Lynn McNeil of Cedar, Mich., was found under 2 feet of snow in a tree well, the depression of snow that forms around a tree base.The Steamboat Pilot & Today newspaper reports that McNeil was in Steamboat skiing with friends. Patrollers found McNeil’s body at the base of a double-black-diamond run.In southwest Colorado, Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort officials say a 14-year-old Bayfield, Colo., girl died after hitting a tree Tuesday on an intermediate run. La Plata County Deputy Coroner John Dunn said Madeline Milner suffered heavy injuries to her liver, as well as head injuries. She had turned to talk to a friend while skiing and turned back just before hitting the tree, Dunn said.McNeil and Milner were wearing helmets.
