Granby teen accelerates in car racing
June 12, 2013
Zac Munro has a knack for speed.
The 17-year-old Middle Park High student will spend the bulk of his summer weekends roaring around tracks 2 to 3.5 miles long in a Mazda Spec Miata, speeding by 10 to 40 of his peers in an attempt to win the Rocky Mountain Region title.
It’s Munro’s second season of racing, and he kicked off the year on a high note. During his first race, set in Salt Lake City late last March, he won third place at Saturday’s race and swept second place on Sunday against eight of his peers. The teen has managed to finish between first and third in all seven of his 2013 competitions so far, apart from a car breakdown that prevented him from finishing an event.
This year Munro is competing in the National Auto Sport Association’s Teen Mazda Challenge. The challenge is open to youth ages 13 to 22, who compete at nationally sanctioned road racing events. Each race weekend holds two to three events. Munro will compete at tracks from Pueblo, Colo. to Topeka, Kan., to Hastings, Neb.
If the Granby teen takes the Rocky Mountain Region title, he’ll qualify to compete in finals. For more information, visit http://www.teenmazdachallenge.magix.net.
