Lady Panther volleyball leads the league
October 11, 2013
GRANBY – The Lady Panthers’ Talise Hansen paved the road to victory, serving up a fiery streak of serves to start the Oct. 8 home match with a 13-1 lead.
The Timberwolves were not to be discouraged as they battled for points.
Even so, the Panthers maintained control, and with a powerful untouched rocket of a serve from co-captain Mary Acord, the score advanced with Panthers up 16-3.
With a decisive victory in the first period for the Panthers, with a score of 25-9, the Timberwolves were ready to come back.
After giving away two points in the second set, the lady panthers rallied, and soon enough it was 3-3.
The Lady Panthers then took the lead, and with a smash serve from Acord, the score put the Panthers up 15-6. The streak continued for the Panthers until an out serve made it 17-7.
After a controversial point, Referee Mark Birdseye made a pivotal line call for a corner serve from Kensie Mcroy who led the Panthers all the way to the end of the second period to win it, once again, 25-9.
“We tend to struggle with the mental toughness when it gets close. That’s been a struggle for us this year and we are working to improve that,” said Coach Kelly Kraus of the Pinnacle Timberwolves, about the second period loss
The Lady Panthers clawed their way in the third set, and they soon built the score to a 13-5 lead. At this point coach Kraus called a time-out to help the Timberwolves regain mental focus.
At 24-8, Panther fans stood with their pointer fingers’ held high to usher in the game point. Lady Panther Keren Bakke had the winning attack, ending the game at 25-8.
Coach Nicci Guerreri immediately set her sights on the Lady Panthers’ next challenge.
“With homecoming coming we need to focus on what our job is,” she said, after the game.
Saturday’s game on Oct. 12 against Bennett High School will be a pivotal game, Guerreri said, who called it “The biggest game of the season.”
The lady Panthers, with only a single league loss, hope to continue their lead this coming weekend.
