Middle Park Crushes KIPP Collegiate 55-16
October 24, 2012
The Middle Park High School football team dominated the KIPP Collegiate Tigers by a score of 55-16 last Thursday night in Granby on the Panther’s Field. The Panthers used all three facets of the game to score the lopsided victory over the Tigers. Middle Park forced 3 fumbles, rushed for over 360 yards, and returned two kickoffs for touchdowns to win in exciting fashion for the third week in a row. “We are clicking on all cylinders right now even though we have some key injuries”, said Head Coach Troy Schmidt. “We are on a roll that hopefully continues into the play-offs.” The Panthers have been without at least 5 starters the last three games, but refuse to let that slow their pursuit of a spot in the sweet 16 of the 2A playoffs.
Behind the explosive blocking of Nick Brynoff, Dillon Berger, Cody Garrett, Steven Kentfield, Sage Wall, Jace Linke and Kade Silvernale the Panthers would be up 34-0 by just the end of the 1st quarter. Henry Southway ran for three 1st quarter touchdowns, while Connor Jennings and Moses Aguilar would add one each for the Panthers. John Stensvad would add the extra-points and provide 6 touchbacks on kickoffs which kept Middle Park with the advantage in field position all night. Southway would add an early 2nd quarter touchdown to put the Panthers up 41-0, and the rest of the 2nd quarter would see the entire bench of Middle Park used for the rest of the game. By halftime, all 24 available Panther players had played in the game. “It was great to have all our young guys get a chance to play early and reward the hard work they put in on the ‘scout team’, Schmidt said. “Those young guys have a tremendous amount to do with all the success of the varsity. They are absolutely essential.” Those players would make a huge goal line stand at the end of the first half to preserve the 41-0 Halftime score.
The second half would see KIPP put together two scoring drives, but each would be answered immediately with electrifying kickoff returns for touchdowns by Southway (91 yards) and Kentfield (75 yards). That would leave the final score Middle Park 55 – KIPP 16. Southway would end the night with 9 carries for 237 yards, Stensvad would add two carries for 50 yards, Aguilar had 3 carries for 38 yards and Jennings would add 2 carries for 30 yards. Defensively, Middle Park was led by Dalton Tucker with 8 tackles, Jennings and Brynoff would add 4 tackles, and Wall, Garrett and Stensvad would contribute four tackles each. Kentfield would force a fumble and Chappy Anderson, Chance Martin and Southway would each recover a fumble.
The Panthers will need one more strong effort tomorrow night against the Pinnacle Timberwolves in order to secure their automatic berth into the play-offs. Come out and support your Panthers at 7 p.m. tomorrow night at Middle Park High School’s Panther field and root them on to their first post-season appearance since 1992.
