MPHS Homecoming week follows big wins

It is Homecoming Week for Middle Park High School (MPHS) this week, Oct. 3 through Oct. 7.

East Grand is celebrating the annual tradition in standard ways, with school spirit days scheduled throughout the week. An Iron Man Volleyball game and a Powder Puff football game scheduled for Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. Immediately following the Powder Puff football game MPHS will hold the Homecoming Bonfire in the parking lot west of the MPHS football field. The bonfire scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.

Several MPHS sports teams will be competing this week including volleyball matches against Clear Creek on Thursday, football against Arvada on Friday, a Cross Country meet at Platte Canyon High School on Saturday and a boys soccer match and girls volleyball matches against Arrupe Jesuit on Saturday. This week’s athletic contests follow a successful week for student athletes in Middle Park.

Soccer

Several MPHS sports teams will be competing this week including volleyball matches against Clear Creek on Thursday, football against Arvada on Friday, a Cross Country meet at Platte Canyon High School on Saturday and a boys soccer match and girls volleyball matches against Arrupe Jesuit on Saturday.

The MPHS soccer boys decisively defeated the Bennett Tigers on Saturday Oct. 1 by a score of 8-4. The Panthers were led by Cesar Sandoval and Jaime Rios who each tallied two goals during the game. Adding to the Panther’s tally Saturday were Luka Senovaitis, Elliot Shaw, Davis Lavato and Hayden Smith who each recorded one goal. Assisting with goals last weekend were Chris Orear and Ryan Christensen along with Senovaitis, Shaw, Sandoval and Lavato.

The Panther boys soccer team will play against Arrupe Jesuit in Granby at 11 a.m. Saturday Oct. 8.

Volleyball

The Lady Panthers volleyball team also recorded a win last week. The Panthers defeated the Academy Wildcats on Thursday Sept. 29 in three quick matches. The ladies from MPHS won 25-14, 25-18 and 25-16.

Harley Phillips and Kiera Barr led the Panthers in hitting with eight kills and seven kills respectively. Morgan Shaw was the teams lead blocker with six total blocks. Maddie Eichler was the team’s leader for digs with eight while Analys Hanna and Lexi Blixt each tallied seven digs. Layne Neiberger was the teams lead assistor with 26 assists.

So far this year the lady Panthers are 11-1 on the volleyball court. Their next match is against Clear Creek at 4 p.m. on Thursday Oct. 6.

Cross Country

The Cross Country runners from MPHS were out on the trail this last weekend, competing in the Sheridan High School Invitational on Saturday Oct. 1. The lady Panthers squad on the Cross Country team, including Alyssa Petersen, Raelee Granger, Hayley Friesen, Jesse Hoyhtya, Selena Stoncius and Madison DeCicco won the meet. Alyssa Petersen took first place, her first individual cross country victory.

The Panther boys also had a good day taking second place during the meet with student Eric Berry taking third place overall. The Panthers Cross County team will head to Platte Canyon High School for their next meet on Saturday Oct. 8.

Football

The football boys took their overall record to 3-2 last Friday with a strong performance over Denver West. The Panthers defeated Denver West 38-6 for the opening of their Flatirons League scheduled play.

On the offensive side of things MPHS quarterback junior Sam Colley recorded two pass completions for touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns last Friday. Senior team kicker Elliot Shaw had a perfect game notching five out of five Point After Touchdown (PAT) kicks and scoring a 22-yard field goal.

Defensively the Panthers recorded one interception, made by Sam Colley while playing on defense, and six sacks. The boys forced six fumbles, recovering two, with senior Ricky Mills causing three of those and freshman James Gallegos causing two. Sophomore Ben Kuhnel lead the team with six solo tackles while senior Blake Straub was not far behind with five solo tackles.

The Panther football team will face the Arvada Bulldogs at 7 p.m. this Friday at MPHS.
