The West Grand Mustangs boy’s basketball team lost to Meeker by six points on Friday, Jan. 17, in a nail-biting game that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final buzzer sounded.
Meeker managed to put 63 points on the board during the game with West Grand accumulating 57 points.
“I thought we played well,” said West Grand Coach Leo Pesch. “We made a lot of mistakes and dumb fouls at the end and just couldn’t get a bucket.”
Meeker managed to put four more points on the board than West Grand in the first quarter of the game and held the Mustangs from advancing past their lead in the second quarter.
“These are big games for us. I hope the seniors realize it is their last year and that they need to play together offensively and defensively.”

At the half, the hard-fought game had taken its toll on both teams as they battled to gain the advantage. Both teams only put eight points on the board during the third quarter as the two defenses worked hard to snub out the other’s offense.
West Grand fought to put points on the board and stop Meeker’s advance and nearly did by holding Meeker to their four-point lead for the first three quarters of the game while steadily matching their opponents point-for-point.
Meeker’s defense held the Mustangs from gaining the upper hand during the game as West Grand brought the game to a two — and sometimes — a one-point difference on a number of occasions by draining three-pointers.
As West Grand rallied in the fourth quarter to the cheers of their fans, the Mustangs had a couple of fouls called against them that helped the Cowboys push their lead ahead by two more points, bringing the game to a finish.
The loss puts the Mustang’s record at 8-3 overall and 0-2 in their league as they prepare to take on another tough two teams, Paonia and Hotchkiss, in league matches this upcoming weekend.
“These are big games for us,” Pesch said. “I hope the seniors realize it is their last year and that they need to play together offensively and defensively.”
Paonia defeated Meeker during a Jan. 11 game by a score of 44-41, and lost to Hotchkiss by two points in December. This weekend will be the first time West Grand will play Paonia this year, whose team carries a 6-4 overall record and a 2-0 league record.
West Grand will tip off against Hotchkiss on Sunday, Jan. 25, which holds a 8-2 overall record and a 2-0 league record.
Hotchkiss and Paonia are the top two teams in the 2A/1A West Slope league, while West Grand sits at the number 8 spot.
While West Grand will be leaning on their seniors to lead their team to victories this weekend, Pesch commented that, most importantly he wants to see his team “come together and have fun and play the game,” he said. “We’ll get it going.”
