The Shining Stars Foundation presents the Winter Park Half Marathon & 5K trail running race on Saturday, September 10 at Grand Park in Fraser.
This is their fourth year hosting the race with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Shining Stars Foundation.
The organization serves local and national families and provides social and recreational opportunities for children facing cancer and other life threatening illnesses.
All programs are events are provided at no cost to the family, said Ryndi Zastrow Program-Events Coordinator for the Shining Stars Foundation.
The Winter Park Half Marathon is 90 percent dirt road and trails.
“The half marathon course is beautiful. Normally the race is in June but we moved it to September. We hope the weather will be runner friendly,” said Zastrow.
With the leaves changing the course will be spectacular on Saturday morning.
The start is in Grand Park and runners will head up through the Vasquez neighborhood and hit County Road 7 where it will turn to dirt. The course will run to Sunken Bridges and circle back to the start. The single-loop course elevation starts at 8,700 feet and tops out at 9,500 feet.
“The 5K run is entirely on the Grand Park trail system and is a nice, mellow trail; perfect for beginner racers,” said Zastrow.
There are about 100 registered runners and Zastrow expects many last minute registrations. Every racer receives a finisher hat, swag bag and raffle. At the start there will be food, drinks, a photo booth, music and a fun party that will continue until noon.
