The West Grand High School sports teams had a good weekend, with the boys and girls basketball teams both winning a pair of contests and a West Grand grappler earning a top finish at the SoRoCo Invitational Wrestling Tournament.
The Lady Mustangs defeated Lake County, 43-37, on Friday night and then traveled to South Park for an even more convincing victory, 55-38.
Against the Panthers of Lake County, West Grand was missing three of its upperclassman, who were competing in a Pom Squad competition. Coach Davin Boydstun said his two seniors, Kaitlyn Adams and Kristina Ekren stepped up their games and the younger girls filled in seamlessly.
Sophomore Bailey Monnahan and freshman Charlee Mangus handled the ball and ran the offense. “They gave us quality minutes,” Boydstun said. With three of the starters getting into early foul troubles, Boydstun commended the job of Iris Melindez and Megan Setliff.
Led by Adams, who scored 16 points, all nine players who suited up for the varsity game contributed in the scoring column. Ekren and Monnahan had six points apiece while Payton Coleman put in five points for West Grand. Ekren had eight steals in the contest.
In the victory over South Park, Coach Boydstun said, guards Anna Cunico and Sarah Vance helped speed up the game by putting pressure on South Park’s guards in the press. Monnahan again handled the ball well and played tough perimeter defense.
“Kristina (Ekren) anticipated well in the press, turning steals into layups. Kaitlyn (Adams) played solid on both ends of the court, taking the ballot the basket hard and slowing down a very talented South Park post player.”
Adams led the team in scoring with 15 points, while Cunico put in 12 points, Ekren scored nine and Vance and Skylar LePage had six points apiece.
The two wins helped West Grand to improve to 2-1 on the season, after losing its season opener to Gilpin County.
The Lady Mustangs are on the road this weekend, traveling to play Clear Creek on Friday and then to Aspen on Saturday.
Freshman Steven Terrazas won the heavyweight division at the SoRoCo tournament by winning all three of his matches. Coach Jeff Matney commended the young wrestler for his fine effort.
Also picking up wins at the tournament were sophomore Cole Tracy (138 lbs.) and Scotty Smith (160 lbs.). Both wrestlers were 1-2 on the day. The squad is rounded out by Antonio Corrales and Mitch Cunico.
The Mustangs will be hosting the annual West Grand Invitational this Saturday in Kremmling. Coach Matney is anticipating that 18 teams will be participating. The public is welcome and invited to witness some good mat action this weekend.
The West Grand boys basketball team improved its record to 3-1 on the season with its wins over Lake County, 52-38, and South Park, 67-42.
The boys played an outstanding second quarter against Lake County, outscoring the Panthers, 30-11. The first and third quarters were essentially even and Lake County ended the game on a 15-4 run. The outcome of the game was really never in doubt after that dominating second quarter.
Casey Gore led the team in scoring with 19 points, Nick Ritschard scored 11, Leo Pesch chipped in with eight and Dillon Willson connected for seven points in the game. Ritschard was the leading rebounder with 10 and Jacob Erwin grabbed eight caroms. Ritschard also led the team in steals with five while Willson was credited with four steals.
In the South Park contest, the Mustangs outscored the Burros in every frame as they grabbed the 15-point victory on the road. West Grand was especially dominant in the second and third quarters.
Gore again led the team in scoring with 19 points, while Reno Davidson scored 11 points, Ritschard added 10 points, Willson had nine and Pesch added seven to the cause.
Ritschard led the team in rebounds with 11, while Erwin grabbed eight boards and Javier Castillo was credited with seven rebounds. Davidson led the team in steals with four.
The Mustangs travel to Clear Creek on Friday night for their only game of the weekend. West Grand opened the season last weekend with wins over Vail Mountain and a loss to KIPP Academy.
