Habitat Hobble 5K, 10K, take place June 14

On Saturday, June 14, the Grand County Habitat for Humanity will host its 13th annual Habitat Hobble. The Hobble is Habitat’s major local fundraiser and raises money needed to buy the lumber, nails, drywall and all the other items needed to build a Habitat house. Again this year, the Hobble will offer both 5K and 10K courses, both runs kicking off at 9 a.m. at Cooper Creek Square in Winter Park.

The 5K course will begin at Cooper Creek Square in Winter Park, run north on Lion’s Gate Street, loop around in Grand Park and return back to Cooper Creek Square.

Due to the heavy spring run-off, the 10K course has been diverted away from the Fraser River. It will now run north along U.S. 40 and then turn back through Grand Park, returning along Lion’s Gate to Cooper Creek Square.

The Hobble is a dog-friendly, family friendly event and includes a finish line party with food, live music by locals’ favorite, the Sasquatch Mountain Project, and a silent auction including a wealth of dining, lodging, recreational opportunities and merchandise. Join the fun run and say hello to Shelley Heckerson and her two children who will be moving into their new home in Granby this fall, the 11th Habitat house in Grand County.

Participants are encouraged to register in teams of five. Teams who raise funds exceeding their registration fee will compete for the 2014 Team Spirit Trophy.

This year’s event is dedicated to the memories of two local men important to Habitat’s mission of providing safe, decent affordable homes in our mountain community – Bill Tucker and Dawn Cone.

Bill Tucker was Habitat’s first board president and was a tireless worker on the first nine Habitat houses in Grand County and a most generous supporter of Habitat and its families.

In 2013 the late Dawn Cone gifted his 1950s-era cabin and land to Habitat. The site will become home for Habitat’s 2014 family.
