Grand County Trails: Cycling group rides start season in Grand

Trails are opening up from the long winter snows. But some are blocked by fallen trees and rockslides or have water damage and need more special attention. The guardian agencies like Headwaters Trails Alliance and Fraser Valley Partnership for Trails need more eyes. They can’t be everywhere to see these problems. Both are currently working with the Adopt-a-Trail Program and U.S. Forest Service to provide an avenue to report trail damage and get it taken care of properly. Please help by doing your part to report problems. And start looking for the new signs developed together by HTA, towns, and government agencies that are to be installed this summer.

Groups of riders have begun their weekly rides. The Ladies group rides on Wednesdays, usually 6 p.m., and gets together at different locations announced a day or two before. They break up into ability levels so there is something for almost everyone, and they often get together for apps afterward on a social basis. To get on their email list, contact this year’s coordinator Christina Russell at crussellcmt@gmail.com.

Also, Beavers Sport Shop is sponsoring an open ride for intermediate and above riders on Fridays at 6 p.m. Meet at the Beavers Sport Shop at the Best Western Hotel in Winter Park. Call 726-5988 for more information.

2014 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act and the 20th Anniversary of the Grand County Wilderness Group. The U.S. Forest Service’s Sulphur Ranger District and Grand County Wilderness Group are working together to present events during June and July. Visit the Grand County Wilderness Group website www.gcwg.org for information about these events and our local organization and visit www.wilderness50th.org to see events planned around the country.

Get out and enjoy our beautiful Grand County. Give your thanks to those helping us maintain our local trails and wilderness and try to figure what you can do to help. Even the smallest things make a difference.
