WINTER PARK — As costume-sporting skiers and boarders started filling the lift chairs, a crowd of onlookers gathered around the small pond that had been created by Winter Park Resort’s grooming crew for the 45th annual Spring Splash on Sunday, April 21.
At the top of the Spring Splash downhill course, competitors required to start backwards navigated through a “bamboo forest” made from slalom gates, then found a few sharp turns before finally committing to the last steep section of the course across the pond.
After watching more than 50 brave men and women take their chances at skiing or boarding their ways across the pond, which was about as warm as one would imagine a pond dug out of snow would be, all of the last-day partiers convened as Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe rocked the base of the resort.
The night before, Julian Marley & the Uprising performed to round-out Springtopia at Winter Park Resort.
The resort was lucky enough to see nearly 3 feet of powder in the week prior to the closing celebration, allowing the mountain to remain 100 percent open for its closing weekend.
Smiles were plentiful among the crowd as people added yet another successful ski season to their books and enjoyed the sunshine on the last day of the 2012-13 season.
Although the recent snowfalls seemed to have buried the prospect of summer, it’s now time to look forward to fishing, hiking, biking and sun-tan-lotion applying, just around the corner.
