Ryan Summerlin September 11, 2012
The Rev. Revel Matheke, 71, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Saratoga, Wyo., died Sunday morning, Sept. 2, 2012, at the Davis Hospice Center in Cheyenne, Wyo., after a six-month battle with cancer.
She entered the Cheyenne facility about 10 days ago and was accompanied by her husband, the Rev. Dr. David Matheke, who was at her bedside when she passed away.
A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at 1 p.m. in the Saratoga Presbyterian Church at the corner of Third and Bridge streets with Rev. David Matheke officiating.
Plans are being made by family members for a funeral service in Colorado later this month.
Rev. Revel, as she preferred to be addressed, became minister of the First Presbyterian Church of Saratoga in the summer of 2008 and delivered her first sermon at the Church sanctuary Sept. 6. She and her husband moved into the Presbyterian manse on the west bench on Sept. 1 of that year and had lived there since.
A life long Presbyterian, she came here from Saint Paul, Neb., where she had served five years as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church there. Prior to Saint Paul, she served as interim pastor at Trinity Church in the Pines in Grand Lake and volunteer coordinator for the 215th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) held in Denver, in 2003.
A native of Colorado, she enjoyed all sorts of needle crafts (knitting, crocheting, cross stitch and quilting), puzzles, cooking, reading, traveling, gardening, playing the piano and organ and sang in both the church and community choirs.
She held a master’s degree in divinity from the Iliff School of Theology in Denver. Before going to seminary, Rev. Revel enjoyed a successful career in nursing, followed by several years as executive secretary to the president of Loretto Heights College in Denver, and the executive director of The Denver Foundation, where she worked closely with community leaders.
She later became program assistant in the Iliff Institute for Lay and Clergy Education which provides continuing education for lay persons and clergy. Her work at Iliff became her incentive for entering the ministry.
Revel Lorraine Matheke was born July 28, 1941, in Denver, to Ren and Velma (Lutz) DeBoer and spent her childhood in Denver. She earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing in 1963 from the University of New Mexico where she was inducted into the National Chemistry Honor Society. Also at UNM she was a member of ROTC and was commissioned a Navy nurse, later serving in the Navy during the Vietnam war. She was married to David Matheke on March 20, 2006, in St. Paul, Neb.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband David of Saratoga; a son William Loedy of Denver; two daughters, Sara Reese of San Francisco, Calif., and Nancy Loedy of Benirrama, Spain; stepson David Matheke of North Ridge, Calif.; granddaughter Hannah Elizabeth Silver of San Francisco; and two sisters, Julia Betts of Johnstown, and Adele Marks of Aurora.
