Grand County officials: Juvenile playing with lighter started Fraser fire

A 2.5-acre brush fire was reported around 12:20 p.m. on Monday, June 10. The fire, which one witness said was growing by the minute and officials reported tripled in size in a matter of minutes, was burning in small trees and grass 40 feet behind the Fraser Public Library on private land. The library and residents of Muse Street were immediately evacuated as a precaution.
High winds that fueled the fire were pushing the fire east toward the library and the town of Fraser, threatening to destroy the library and move toward residences.
East Grand Fire with support from Grand Fire responded to the call and quickly had the fire under control. The fire was 100 percent contained by 1:45 p.m. and no injuries were reported.
Responding agencies also included the Grand County Sheriff’s Office, the Fraser Police Department, Granby Fire, the U.S. Forest Service, Grand County EMS, the Grand County Office of Emergency Management, Grand Lake Fire, and Hot Sulphur Springs Fire.
Residents were able to return to their homes and library after the fire was confirmed to be out.
Grand County officials have confirmed that a single juvenile playing with a lighter is responsible for starting the blaze.
