The West Grand Board of Education has announced four finalists from its pool of 15 applicants for the West Grand School District superintendent position, according to a press release.
Pat Bershinsky, Michael Page, Kevin Schott and Richard Walter Sr., all currently superintendents in Colorado schools, will move forward to the interview stage of the search, said West Grand Board of Education President Dean Billington.
Interviews will be conducted May 13. Billington said the board plans to make a decision at their meeting that evening.
“However, if we don’t have a good fit, then we obviously aren’t going to hold ourselves to that,” he said. “We might start the process again.”
The position would begin on July 1.
The school board used a screening criteria developed from a “community focus survey” posted on the district website to select the finalists, according to the press release.
The search for a new superintendent is currently ahead of schedule, Billington said. The original timeline for the search planned for interviews as late as May 28.
The Colorado Association of School Boards (CASB) is currently providing the district with various services like questions for candidates and background screenings in order to assist in the application process, Billington said.
Current superintendent Terry Vanderpan, who did not return calls by press time on Tuesday, resigned at the March 11 board of education meeting.
Vanderpan’s letter gave no reason for his resignation, though Vanderpan stated, “I have enjoyed my time here and also the opportunity I’ve had to work with the outstanding employees of this district and the school board throughout the past two years.
“This has been a wonderful community with great parents and outstanding kids. It’s been my pleasure to get to know and work with all of them as well.”
York accepts principal position
West Grand High School Principal Kyle York has accepted a position as principal of West Grand Elementary School. York’s current position will be absorbed into the new superintendent position, Billington said.
Billington said the board has taken into account each applicant’s qualifications to act as both superintendent and principal. The purpose of combining the positions was to prevent an administration that was too “top heavy,” Billington said.
Vanderpan currently acts as elementary school principal.
Several calls to York on Tuesday also were not returned by press time.
“We’ve tried to align ourselves with candidates who fit those qualifications, who fit those kinds of needs,” Billington said.
