WP Express platform on track
November 3, 2016
The Winter Park Express train platform located at Winter Park Resort is nearing completion. Winter Park Resort Director of Public Relations and Communications Steve Hurlbert said all that is left to complete the project is to hook up the heating element to the boiler room, which is located behind West Portal Station, and finish some aesthetic touch-ups and signage. All the concrete on the platform has been poured.
The new commuter rail line from Denver International Airport to Union Station enables visitors to travel directly from their flight to Winter Park.
The project, which has a total budget of $3.5 million, includes other infrastructure improvements at the Union Pacific siding in Fraser.
Additional funding for the platform includes a $1.5 million grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), a $100,000 grant from the City of Denver, a $100,000 grant from the Town of Winter Park, and $1,000 from the Colorado Rail Passengers Association. The remaining funds will came from Winter Park Resort.
Hurlbert estimates the platform will be fully complete by the end of November or early December, which will be ahead of schedule. Hurlbert attributed the quick work time to the dry and warm weather the resort has experienced this fall. Hurlbert said he attended a Colorado Ski Country convention in Australia, and had media representatives from resorts all over the world express how excited they were about the Winter Park Express. With the new connection to DIA, the Winter Park Express connects the resort globally, not just to the Front Range, Hurlbert said. “We are trying to wrap our heads around how big this really is.”
